    What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a natural language processing technology developed by OpenAI that uses machine learning models for generating text that resembles human-like sentences from input text.

"English, please." In simpler terms, this is an online tool that will produce very human-like responses to almost any prompt is it given. It does this by using the magic of artificial intelligence and supervised learning, which allows the program to study billions of examples of written knowledge and human behavior to produce a fitting result for your prompt.

By receiving human feedback on the responses it gives, the software is able to modify its way of thinking to better suit the needs of the input data. For example, if the program is constantly getting bad feedback on its responses to cat-related questions, the AI will automatically rework its responses to better answer the same cat questions in the future. This way, the AI is continuously learning and improving its ability to answer questions.

    How is it unique?

It is different from traditional chatbots and AI models in a few key ways. Traditional chatbots are often limited to specific tasks and only respond based on predetermined prompts or commands. These bots may be useful for certain applications, but they cannot have meaningful conversations with humans as ChatGPT can.

Unlike the existing conversational AI technologies, such as Dialogflow and IBM Watson, ChatGPT utilizes the transformer architecture approach. This allows it to capture the context of each sentence and generate relevant responses that make sense within the conversation.

It also has a self-attention layer, which allows it to focus on specific words or phrases in order to better understand their relevance and provide more accurate responses. Effectively, the program is designed to work in a way very similar to the human brain, using deep learning to constantly analyze inputs for future scenarios.

    How does it work?

    Training the AI

ChatGPT is trained using millions of examples of natural language conversation, such as conversations from online forums, books, or movies. The goal of this training is to teach the model how to generate human-like responses to questions or prompts. This training involves a method called supervised learning, where it involves an algorithm on a labeled dataset, where each example in the dataset is paired with the correct output.

During the training process, the AI is given inputs in the form of words and phrases which are parsed into vectors that represent the data. It then uses this training data to generate a response that is most likely to be the best answer given its context.

    Natural language processing

Natural language processing (NLP) plays an important role in how ChatGPT works. NLP is a branch of artificial intelligence that focuses on the interpretation and manipulation of natural languages, such as English or Spanish.

It uses NLP to convert text into data that can be used by its AI large language model. This includes breaking down sentences into their component words and phrases, identifying the parts of speech for each word or phrase, as well as detecting any grammar or syntax errors.

NLP also allows the AI to understand the context of a conversation, which is essential in order to generate meaningful responses.

    The algorithm of ChatGPT

The amount of data that ChatGPT can intake is very large, so it uses a pre-trained transformer algorithm to generate responses. The transformer is an AI model that was developed by Google and OpenAI which operates on a self-attention mechanism.

This allows the program to focus on specific words or phrases in order to better understand their relevance and provide more accurate responses. The transformer works by first splitting the input sentence into sub-words and then creating a vector for each section.

A vector is used to represent the meaning of the word in a mathematical form.

Once the vectors are created, they are passed through multiple layers of neural networks where their relevance is calculated as it pertains to generating a response. Then, with the help of all the training, the AI can select the most relevant response to fulfill the given prompt.

We know; that's a lot of jargon to learn in one sitting. In reality, the miracle of AI tools can be broken down into a ton of complex mathematics, which turns the gears behind these fascinating machines.

Future of ChatGPT and AI automation

The possibilities of ChatGPT and other AI technologies are endless. In the future, these programs may be used to help automate customer service, provide more accurate medical diagnoses, or even engage in complex legal debates.

AI technology is constantly evolving, and developers are continuously pushing the boundaries of what can be done with it. With further advances in its capabilities, ChatGPT and other AI programs can become even more valuable in the years to come.

Can professors tell if you use ChatGPT?

The answer is technically yes. It is designed to generate responses that mimic natural language patterns, making it difficult for professors or anyone else to tell if the text was written by a human or a machine. However, as with any form of automated writing, it is not perfect.

This means that it can often be detected by certain plagiarism checkers such as Turnitin.com or GPTZero. Not to mention that after reading presumably thousands of papers, your professors will likely have an eye for those who truly know the subject and those who do not. Many teachers and bosses report online that they can sniff out a ChatGPT essay from a mile away, with a certain amount of training.

    Will ChatGPT replace jobs?

While it is true that AI technology will continue to advance and may eventually replace some jobs, there is little need to worry about ChatGPT taking over just yet. Rather than outright replacing people, this AI tool was designed to help automate mundane tasks and free up time for humans to focus on more creative endeavors.

Plus, ChatGPT may be opening up more jobs in the future. From customer service agents to journalists, it can play a valuable role in making jobs more efficient and allowing people to focus on higher-level tasks. Skeptics are very much valid in being concerned about the future of AI, but for now, it seems as though it is simply shifting jobs towards more tech-related industries, rather than outright eradicating jobs.

Additionally, there are thousands of jobs that a simple AI chatbot will struggle to take, such as farming, engineering, and hospitality. Take for example the hundreds of online memes and images that depict AI struggling to paint human hands, or giving silly responses to certain questions. AI is getting incredibly advanced, but it still has a long way to go before we live in an all-out Terminator world.
