    First, meet Google Chat

In this new era, more and more companies and teams across the globe have begun to embrace the shift to digital communication, both in work and daily life. With a developing remote work culture and widespread use of technology in all sectors, we can kiss goodbye to the norm of stuffy board meetings and corporate emails. To this, we say good riddance, thanks to Google Chat and other Google Workspace tools that have been revolutionizing the way people communicate online.

For those not familiar, Google Chat (formerly known as Google Hangouts Chat) is a relatively new addition to Google's toolset that offers messaging and collaboration for teams. Similar to Slack and other team chat apps, Google Chat builds upon this model with threaded conversations, advanced security, and even Gemini for Workspace support. You can speak privately with one, or address groups in chatrooms known as spaces that support up to 500,000 members. Need to delve deeper into a topic? You can start a Google Meet directly from a conversation with another user.

For organizations already using Google Workspace, Google Chat is often included as part of the subscription, making it a cost-effective solution. This can be especially beneficial for businesses looking to maximize their investment in Google’s ecosystem.

Our favorite features of Google Chat:

Integration with Google Workspace: One of the standout features of Google Chat is its seamless integration with Google Workspace. This allows users to collaborate easily on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, all within the chat interface.

Threaded conversations: Unlike many chat apps where conversations can become cluttered and hard to follow, Google Chat offers threaded conversations. This feature helps keep discussions organized and ensures that important messages don't get lost in the stream of chat.

Advanced security: Google Chat is built on Google's secure infrastructure, providing advanced security features such as data encryption. It also complies with various industry standards, ensuring that your communications are safe and secure.

Gemini for Workspace support: Google Chat includes Gemini for Workspace, which offers real-time collaboration tools and smart suggestions, enhancing productivity and making teamwork more efficient.

How IFTTT integrates with Google Chat

How exactly can IFTTT connect Google Chat with all your favorite apps? We promise it's not magic. In fact, we made our tool so simple that it can be explained just using our name: If This, Then That (IFTTT). The basis of IFTTT lies in using a Trigger and an Action to complete whatever task you come up with. So, you set a Trigger (IF), and an action will happen (THAT).

Here's an example with Google Chat and Acuity Scheduling:

With Google Chat integrations, we also offer three additional conditions to add to your recipe: Query, Filter Code, and Delay.

Query: Will gain additional information from Triggers. For example, you can use metrics such as links clicked, lights switched, or blogs posted. This can help you choose when to run an Applet or to only run it under certain conditions.

Filter Code: This function is great for those with coding ability, looking to add more complex features. Filter Code allows you to input your own lines of JavaScript, to add new parameters to the Applet.

Delay: A simple yet very powerful feature, Delay will let you choose an amount of time between the Trigger and Action.

See where we're going with this? With these three features, added with the Trigger/Action relationship, you can create any automation you dream of. Here are a few examples we cooked up for you to use for yourself, or as inspiration for your own Applets. Remember, you can create Applets on IFTTT for free, so why wait? Syncing Google Chat to Discord

This automation uses the simple Trigger/Action relationship with IFTTT. This is the most common format for new users to pick up, but don't be fooled, these automations are still powerful. For this example, if a new space is created in Google Chat, a message will automatically be sent to a Discord server of choice. This way, you can keep everyone updated on new tasks or discussions, no matter what platform someone is using at the moment.

    Post-meeting debrief with Google Chat

Want to gather co-workers or team members together after a Zoom meeting? This example utilizes the Delay feature, allowing everyone ten minutes to grab a snack or rest before hopping into a private space to chat. Applets like this are perfect for continuing collaboration after a meeting, where users can discuss topics or work on projects right away.

Viral post detector to Google Chat

If you happen to be taking advantage of IFTTT's new AI tools, like our AI social posting bot, then you might want to know if any of your posts gain real traction. This Applet, which uses the Query feature, will search for Twitter mentions when a social post is generated. If one is detected, it will send a message to a Google Chat space. This is an excellent way to alert the team to a job well done, or maybe a Twitter mention that could be capitalized on.

These integrations are just the start of what can be done with IFTTT and Google Chat. Keep reading to see some of our favorite pre-built Applets ready for you to use.

Keeping teams informed with Google Chat and IFTTT

One of the key audiences using Google Chat are teams. Whether as part of a company or even a group of like-minded hobbyists, no team is too large to find benefits in communicating on this platform. However, what happens when members are using other apps, like Discord and Twitter, and want to be updated on happenings? How do we synchronize communication between these apps and Google Chat? Our automations solve this problem.

  • Easy file sharing with Google Chat

We believe nothing sucks up more precious time than the dreaded file share. "Check your email? Did you get it? Check again? Maybe it's something on my end?" With IFTTT's new Google Chat integrations, you can have a space automatically notified if a file is uploaded to Dropbox, Google Drive, and many more file sharing systems.
