Why archive your Telegram account?

Before we dive into the how-to, let’s discuss why you might want to archive your Telegram account.

Preserve important conversations

Telegram is often used for both personal and professional communication. By archiving your account, you can ensure that important conversations are saved and accessible whenever needed.

Free up space

Storing all your Telegram data on your device can take up a lot of space. Archiving allows you to offload data while still keeping it safe.

Easy access to information

Archived data is structured and searchable, making it easier to access specific information without scrolling through endless chats. You can archive chats to a spreadsheet or notes app, allowing for more customizability.

How does Telegram save chats?

Telegram stores chats using a combination of cloud-based and device-local storage, depending on the type of chat. Regular (non-secret) chats are stored on Telegram's secure cloud servers, allowing users to access messages from multiple devices. These chats are encrypted in transit and at rest but are not end-to-end encrypted, meaning Telegram has the ability to access message data if needed. This cloud-based approach ensures seamless synchronization, backups, and accessibility across devices.

On the other hand, Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption, meaning messages are only accessible on the devices involved in the conversation and are not stored on Telegram’s servers. These chats cannot be accessed from multiple devices and are designed for enhanced privacy, with features like self-destructing messages.

Telegram restricts Secret Chats from any infiltration for privacy reasons, so IFTTT cannot access these to archive them. Additionally, if a self-destructing chat disappears before it can be saved, so there is no way recover the chat and have it archived. IFTTT's system will only work for normal chats sent in non-secret channels.

Now that we understand how to enable a pre-made Applet, let’s walk through the steps to build your own custom Telegram Chat archiving Applet.

Step 1: Set up IFTTT

Create an IFTTT account: If you don’t have an account yet, visit https://ifttt.com/ and sign up for free.

Connect Telegram: Once you’re logged in, go to the “Explore” page and search for Telegram. Click on it and follow the prompts to connect your Telegram account to IFTTT.

Step 2: Create an Applet to archive chats

Start a new Applet: Click on “Create” to start a new Applet. You’ll be asked to define the “This” part of the Applet.

Choose a trigger: Select Telegram as the service and choose a trigger event, such as “New message received.” This tells IFTTT when to start the archiving process.

Define “That” action: Next, choose a service where you want to archive the messages, such as Google Docs or Evernote. Select the action, like “Append to a document” or “Create a note.”

Customize the action fields: Configure the fields to define how the messages should be saved. You can include the chat content, sender info, timestamp, etc.

Finalize and save: Review your Applet and click “Finish” to save it. Your Applet is now active and will archive new messages as they come in.

Archiving isn’t the only thing IFTTT can do. Here are a few more automations that can help take your Telegram game to the next level.
